Street names can remain unchanged while nearly everything built along them changes.
McKinley is still McKinley. Second Avenue is still Second Avenue.
But the view from these streets has changed repeatedly.
Homes have disappeared. Lots have sat empty. Parking has replaced buildings. New housing has gone up. Parcels have been divided and reorganized as development moved through downtown.
Cities rarely transform in one dramatic moment. They change through hundreds of individual decisions about land, buildings and infrastructure.
Over time, the map remains recognizable while the place itself becomes something different.
